A group of seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
