Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.
An important representative commented the incident left him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
