Djokovic Delivers Warning to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"

The tennis star has warned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will persist over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the scheduling of the penalty last year.

Details of the Suspension

Sinner completed a three-month suspension in early 2025 after the global anti-doping body accepted his explanation that a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," the champion remarked in a discussion on a popular YouTube program.

"It's just something that, it was so major, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a specific segment of individuals that will continually reference the incident."

Djokovic's Perspective

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to complete his ban without sitting out any major tournaments.

"The absence of openness, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban occurring between major events, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it's just it was very, very odd," Djokovic added.

Broader Tennis Community Response

"I really don't like how the case was being handled and you could hear numerous fellow athletes, across both tours, who had comparable circumstances coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
