Live Match Coverage
21st Minute: Fierce Play while Both Teams Battle
21st minute: The Broncos advance to halfway and nearly break through the defensive line through Walsh and Shibasaki on the left flank. A further superb kick from Adam Reynolds on the final play keeps Brisbane's momentum. Over three plays they stay on the front foot, but some quick passes release the speedy Jahrome Hughes, and as he's tackled on the defensive 40m line, a six-again is awarded for holding down. The Storm are now in rhythm, and Warbrick slices through the line, followed by Coates making a sprint – only for Walsh to make high contact with a shoulder charge! Could that be a yellow card? Not according to the referee, rules Atkins, because the winger was dropping low. The fullback is placed on report regardless, and Melbourne continue their onslaught.
19 mins: Cameron Munster Directs Melbourne Offense
19th minute: Cameron Munster is active as the Storm move quickly down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Jahrome Hughes kicks high, Katoa sprints forward, but in the marking contest, the forward loses the ball, and Brisbane at last get a breather.
18 mins: Melbourne Apply Force on Brisbane
18 mins: The Storm perform a textbook restart set and put significant force on Mariner with the final kick. Once more, the Broncos fail to reach near halfway in response, and Reynolds is compelled to kick long to stay in the game.
17th Minute: Setback for Melbourne
17 mins: It’s not all good news for Melbourne. Jack Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin injury. Tyran Wishart is entering in his place.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Brisbane (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Brilliant, just brilliant. Following back-to-back restarts, the Broncos are flagging. From tackle three near the try line on the left, Melbourne move the ball inside for two passes before Hughes drops the ball onto his toe and the onrushing Katoa times his charge to perfection to pounce on the loose ball and rise to celebrate his team’s second try!
From slightly right of the posts, Meaney converts his second goal.
12 mins: Melbourne Show Exciting Offense
12 mins: Melbourne appear thrilling in attack. They have pace from the play-the-ball, grunt from the forwards, and sharp passing from the outside players. A dangerous attack ends with a high kick to the left side that is dropped by Walsh and leads to a penalty to the Melbourne for an obstruction on Xavier Coates. The Storm reject the penalty goal and set up near the goalposts. There’s a six again – and a further one – as Munster weaves left and right.
10th Minute: Tense Action
10 mins: Utokiamanu has delivered as promised from the start and his run from the restart enables first Grant, then Ryan Papenhuyzen, to snipe from dummy-half. Jahrome Hughes boots from 40m and Reece Walsh catches the bomb on his 10m line. Brisbane carry reduced thrust in this set and get fortunate on the final play when Hunt’s pass to Adam Reynolds is dropped. Fortunately, the experienced playmaker kicks superbly to force Xavier Coates to retreat and forces the Melbourne wing to sprint from his try line. The Broncos are overzealous with their pursuit, catching the winger high, and Melbourne can kick for attacking field position.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 6-6 Brisbane (Meaney, 8)
After the scrum, Utoikamanu powers forward to the 20m line. Then, from fast play from the play-the-ball, every key Storm player get a touch as they move it out to the right hand side until Nick Meaney straightens up, runs at an angle at serious pace, and carves through a flimsy defensive line to dive over for an immediate response!
The centre dusts himself down to add the conversion. It's a tied game!
7th Minute: Both Sides Trade Sets
7th minute: The two teams exchange conservative sets either side of halfway, but then the Broncos attempt to attack on their left, only to fail to find Gehamat Shibasaki with the ball. Warbrick advances quickly and earns a knock on for his troubles.
5 mins: Ideal Opening for Broncos
5th minute: This marks the absolute dream start for Brisbane, scoring first before the Storm have even handled the ball, in an attack led by both Payne Haas and Reece Walsh. The Storm might feel a little aggrieved at Grant Atkins awarding such an early penalty, but they were soundly opened by the rapid Broncos attack.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 0-6 Broncos (Mariner, 3)
After kicking downfield, Brisbane begin their attack. Storm concede a set restart for offside, and in no time the ball is in the danger area. Where is Walsh? Lurking on the right side, drawing in Jack Howarth, standing his ground, then somehow passing to Mariner on his wing. The outside back cuts infield, crosses the try line, then just, only just stays in the playing area as he moves to score beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds kicks the goal, but the video official upholds the referee's call. Accor Stadium is rocking to the sound of ecstatic fans.
2nd Minute: Quick Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Payne Haas, makes the first hit-up of the match and the Storm are up sharply… but just three tackles later the Melbourne concede the opening infringement of the night for Grant interfering with Payne Haas on the floor. The Broncos immediately on the attack.
