Polish forces Scrambles Jets as Russia Targets Western Ukraine
Russian forces targeted Ukraine with missile and drone attacks overnight on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday, focusing on the key western urban center of Lviv region.
Ukraine's neighbour Poland scrambled fighter jets to ensure the security of their national airspace, the national defense forces confirmed. NATO partner planes were similarly activated.
Regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi said two people were fatally injured in strikes in the area, and two more injured.
In other developments, Russian forces again targeted energy infrastructure - and a facility was hit in an nocturnal assault on Zaporizhzhia, where the mayor reported one person died and more than 73,000 people were lacking power.
Military Response
These attacks came days after a American representative said the United States would endorse Ukraine launching deep strikes within Russia's borders.
"Polish and allied aircraft are operating in Polish skies, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness," military officials said.
At early morning, all of Ukraine was placed on high alert following air defense warnings of incoming aerial threats.
Infrastructure Damage
Russia has intensified its attacks on the country's power grid.
The city's administration local officials reported several districts - 43 miles from the border with Poland - had no power, adding that the city's air defence systems were engaged heavily in countering first a drone and then a Russian missile attack.
As of morning hours, parts of the city were left without power and municipal transit was yet to start running, with Sadovyi emphasizing that it was "unsafe to venture outdoors".
In Zaporizhzhia, the nocturnal assault left "over seventy-three thousand users... without electricity", according to regional officials.
An individual was fatally wounded, and nine others hurt, Fedorov said.
A teenage female was one of those receiving medical assistance, he added, posting photos depicting a damaged multi-storey block and a destroyed vehicle from the impact location.
Regional Impact
Public transport in another western city, would "start running later than usual" on Sunday morning, its city administration said.
The multiple strikes were components of Moscow's offensive against the entire nation during the night.
At around early morning, Ukraine's Air Force warned all of the country was under the threat of new missile strikes, following prolonged alert periods and warnings of drone and missile attacks.
Territorial Control
Moscow's troops have taken control of most of the Donbas area, including key eastern cities.
Russian authorities currently controls around a fifth of Ukraine's land, including the Crimea region, which it seized in 2014.
Global Developments
In Russia, air defence units destroyed multiple UAVs overnight, media outlets stated on Sunday.
Last week, a American diplomat indicated that the US would back Ukraine launching deep strikes within Russia.
Meanwhile, another Nato member - the Baltic nation - had to close its airspace temporarily after objects were spotted.
Authorities suspended flights at its main international airport for several hours, before resuming operations at early morning on Sunday.
The airport's operator said the operational pauses and diversions were "because of a possible series of balloons heading toward the aviation facility".
